A month of Pride and that clunky acronym

Pride Toronto held its AGM in October and it was groundbreaking in several important ways: Pride will span the entire month of June, three transgender members were elected to Pride’s board, and we no longer have to rhyme off LGBTTIQQ2SA.

Two members of our board, Michael Ain and Jill Holroyd attended the AGM.  Since then, Marla Green, Michael Ain and I met with Pride’s Jaime Martino to hear more about their plans.

Unofficially, June has always been Pride Month. Certainly Toronto Pflag’s calendar is always loaded in June with schools, businesses and others celebrating Pride. Our beloved accountants from KPMG, PWC, E&Y and Deloitte hold their annual bowl-a-thon in June. Now Inside Out, Toronto’s LGBTQ-focused film festival will slide into June to start the official festivities and Pflag Canada’s Gay Day at Canada’s Wonderland could become a Pride event. Put your thinking caps on!

Anyone who comes to our support meetings will not be surprised to hear there are a record number of transgender members on the new Pride Board of Directors. More and more, trans rules. Congratulations to all the new and returning board members.

And finally, admit it: are you sorry to see the long acronym go? Is it not ironic that the reason it went is that so many were left out? Good riddance and let’s see how we manage calling ourselves “community.”
