There is sadly more to mention here than there is space.
Coco
This week we lost Coco, a trans woman of colour, while she was in the custody of the Toronto Police. The SIU mis-gendered her in their news release. Her story can be read here.
CBC
Three teenage performers on CBC’s Recap gently criticised J.K. Rowling and generated a small negative reaction. The CBC Ombudsman weighed in with a ruling indicating while they were not journalists, they should strive for balance. The kids were forced to do a “more balanced” second show when there was nothing wrong with their first one. CBC should not give trans-deniers a pulpit.
TDOR
November 20 is the International Trans Day of Remembrance. Check out plans by both U of T and York Universities. Additionally, the 519 is hosting a virtual event at 6 PM EST to celebrate and honour the lives of our trans-identified siblings who have passed away. Details can be found on their Facebook page.
Important City of Toronto Survey
In October 2019, Megan Murphy, a Canadian trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF), did a talk at the Toronto Public Library that focused on denying the identities of transgender people and encouraging discrimination and hate toward them. For weeks before trans activists tried in vain to get the event canceled. The Toronto Public Library (TPL) maintained it had a policy of encouraging different opinions.
Toronto Pflag joined hundreds of others to protest the event and I followed up by meeting with Councillor Gord Perks, a TPL board member who voted in favour of allowing the event to go ahead.
In response, the city started a consultative process that was stopped due to COVID. The City has decided to conclude the consultation with a survey. It is important that they hear from as many of us as possible.
Please take a few minutes to support the trans community here.
